West End LIVE Returns to Trafalgar Square This Weekend — Free for All
Europe's largest free musical theatre festival takes over Trafalgar Square on 20-21 June, with performances from over 50 West End shows. Heat alert in effect; arrive early to secure a spot.
West End LIVE returns to Trafalgar Square on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 June 2026, offering free performances from more than 50 top London musicals. The line-up includes long-running classics like Les Misérables, The Lion King and Phantom of the Opera, as well as brand new shows including Beetlejuice, Sinatra and Paddington.
The event runs Saturday 20 June (11am-5pm) and Sunday 21 June (12pm-5pm). Entry is first come, first served, and there were reports of people queuing from 6am in previous years, with the line reaching all the way to Holborn, prompting a one-in, one-out policy when the Square reaches capacity. A prize draw for 100 queue jump places closed on 14 June, so it's now too late to enter.
Heat Warning in Effect
A yellow heat health alert is in effect from 3pm on 17 June to 8pm on 22 June, with temperatures forecast up to 30 degrees. Hot weather can cause overheating, dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, and there is no shade in Trafalgar Square or the entrance queues. Organisers advise carrying water and taking breaks.
An accessible viewing area for wheelchair users and people with other accessibility requirements is located along the North Terrace, offering a view of the stage and BSL interpreters. A free big screen in Victoria Embankment Gardens will stream performances throughout the weekend, located beside Embankment Station just a short walk from Trafalgar Square.
For foreigners new to London, this is one of the best opportunities to sample the city's world-famous theatre scene without buying tickets. The event is completely free and requires no advance booking — just turn up. If you're planning to attend, bring sun protection, water, and consider arriving before 10am on Saturday or opting for the slightly less crowded Sunday. The nearest Tube stations are Charing Cross, Leicester Square, and Embankment.
