UK Seizes Russian Oil Tanker in First Shadow Fleet Raid
Royal Marines boarded and detained a sanctions-busting Russian tanker carrying 700,000 barrels of oil in the English Channel on 14 June, marking Britain's first seizure of a shadow fleet vessel.
British forces seized a Russian-linked oil tanker suspected of breaching sanctions while transiting the English Channel on Sunday 14 June, in what Prime Minister Keir Starmer described as a significant blow to Moscow's war funding. Officers from the National Crime Agency arrested an Indian national on suspicion of sanctions offences, while the Ministry of Defence confirmed the seizure of the tanker Smyrtos, which was carrying 700,000 barrels of Russian oil.
Helicopter Raid in English Waters
The operation marks the first UK-led operation in which its forces have boarded and detained a vessel from Russia's so-called "shadow fleet" – a network of hundreds of tankers used to transport Russian oil and circumvent Western sanctions imposed following Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Royal Marines commandos descended onto the vessel from Chinook helicopters in a predawn raid.
Following the raid, at least six other tankers immediately changed course away from the English Channel. The operation was carried out despite a Russian warship being nearby in international waters.
Impact on Foreign Residents
If you live in the UK or are planning to visit, this development highlights the country's active role in enforcing sanctions against Russia. While the operation itself poses no direct risk to residents or visitors, it demonstrates the UK's strategic position in global maritime enforcement and its close alignment with Western allies on Ukraine-related sanctions. The seizure may lead to increased naval activity in UK waters as authorities continue to target sanctions-evading vessels.
