Poland Opens First Community Forest in Wrocław
Poland has inaugurated its first community forest around Wrocław, marking the beginning of a nationwide environmental protection initiative. Ten more forests are planned for major cities including Warsaw, Kraków, and Poznań.
On Sunday, July 21, Poland's Ministry for Climate and Environment opened the first of 11 planned community forests, launching from a site near Wrocław, the country's third-largest city. Climate Minister Paulina Hennig-Kloska described the milestone as "the beginning of a new approach to forest protection – with residents in mind first and foremost."
Purpose and Design
These protected green spaces are designed to serve dual purposes:
- Recreation and public access for nearby urban residents
- Environmental protection through water retention, climate regulation, and air purification
The ten additional planned locations include Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Łódź, Katowice, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Kielce, Bielsko-Biała, and the Toruń-Bydgoszcz conurbation. According to the government, these forests will eventually be easily accessible to approximately 13 million of Poland's 36 million residents.
Political Context
The plan reflects the current government's shift in forest policy. After taking office in December 2023, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's administration halted some planned logging operations, contrasting with the previous Law and Justice government's expansion of timber harvesting, particularly in the Białowieża Forest. The government had also proposed creating new national parks, though President Karol Nawrocki vetoed that initiative.
For foreign residents and expat families, this expansion of green space represents improved recreational amenities in and around major Polish cities. If you live in or plan to settle near Warsaw, Kraków, or another designated city, these forests will offer free, accessible nature areas—a benefit for quality of life and outdoor activities.
