Heat Health Alert Issued as Temperatures Could Hit 33°C
The UK Health Security Agency issued yellow heat health alerts for parts of England running from 17-22 June, with temperatures potentially reaching the low 30s Celsius this weekend.
A Yellow Heat-Health Alert has been issued by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), which means temperatures could lead to impacts on the health and wellbeing of some people, covering the East Midlands, East of England, London and the southeast of England from Wednesday 17 June and remaining in place until Monday. Temperatures are expected to reach the high 20s Celsius quite widely, with the potential for 32°C to be reached in the south of England on Sunday and potentially even higher temperatures on Monday.
Heatwave Conditions Expected
Some areas in the south and southeast of England are likely to see heatwave criteria met by Saturday and more widely on Sunday, with the potential for temperatures to reach the low 30s in the warmest locations. Headline maximum temperatures for the period are: 32°C on Friday in East Anglia, 28°C on Saturday as the warmest air temporarily shifts away from the UK, 32°C in the south and southeast of England on Sunday and the potential for 33°C in the same areas on Monday.
Alongside the warmth, there will also be spells of rain, particularly across northern and western areas, and a slight chance of thunderstorms across southeastern England. The Met Office notes that while temperatures will be high, conditions may include more cloud cover than typical summer weather.
Practical Advice for Residents
If you live in or are visiting the East Midlands, East of England, London, or the southeast this week, take precautions during the warm spell. Stay hydrated, seek shade during the hottest parts of the day, and check on vulnerable neighbours or family members. Health and social care services in affected regions may experience increased demand. Those with existing health conditions, elderly people, and young children should be especially careful. The alert runs through Monday 22 June, so plan outdoor activities accordingly and be prepared for potentially uncomfortable sleeping conditions during warm nights.
