Workers Accept Pay Cuts in Exchange for Job Security Amid Restructuring
At automotive supplier Mahle and beyond, German workers are trading wage increases and bonuses for multi-year employment guarantees as companies implement large-scale restructuring to survive economic downturns.
A new bargain is taking shape on German shop floors: workers forfeit wage growth and bonuses in exchange for guaranteed employment through 2029. At automotive supplier Mahle, around 4,000 employees in Stuttgart and Kornwestheim have accepted forgoing the 2026 tariff wage increase and portions of their Christmas and holiday bonuses, in return receiving job guarantees until the end of 2029. This trade-off reflects the desperation on both sides as industrial capacity contracts.
A recent ruling by the Federal Labour Court (BAG) on 25 June added legal nuance to the wave of restructuring: minor errors in mass layoff notifications do not automatically nullify the terminations, as long as the protective purpose of the notification remains intact. This court decision weakens legal protections slightly and may encourage employers to pursue restructuring more aggressively.
Broader Policy Shifts
The federal government is preparing labour-market reforms that would allow fixed-term contracts without specific reason to be extended up to 48 months for new hires until the end of 2030, while high earners with monthly salaries above roughly €15,000 would become easier to dismiss. These measures signal government willingness to weaken employment protections in favour of employer flexibility.
For expats and job seekers: If you secure employment in Germany—especially in manufacturing or automotive—expect negotiations to emphasize job security over wage growth. This is not necessarily negative: a guaranteed contract through 2029 provides long-term residence and work visa stability. However, your real purchasing power may stagnate. As a foreigner, you may also face stronger pressure than German colleagues to accept wage cuts, particularly if visa sponsorship renewal hinges on employment continuity. Budget accordingly and prioritize contract durability over immediate wage levels when negotiating.
