Germany Expands Afghan Deportations Under Deal with Taliban
Germany deported 32 Afghan convicted criminals on June 16 and plans up to three charter flights monthly under a controversial agreement with Taliban authorities that critics say legitimizes the regime.
Another 32 men were deported from Germany to Afghanistan on June 16 via a charter flight from Leipzig, based on an agreement with the Islamist Taliban and amid ongoing criticism of returning people to the Central Asian country. The German Interior Ministry stated the deportees were convicted criminals who had committed crimes "including homicide, child sexual abuse, rape, drug trafficking, and extortion with violence".
Plans for Regular Deportation Flights
German authorities are considering increasing charter deportation flights to Afghanistan to as many as three per month following technical-level discussions between representatives of Germany's Interior Ministry and Taliban. At least 100 Afghan nationals with deportation orders are currently being held in prisons or immigration detention facilities in Germany.
The direct channels of agreement with the Taliban allow the federal government to carry out regular deportations to Afghanistan without the involvement of intermediary states. Efforts to deport Afghans to their home country have long faced strong pushback from human rights organizations, the political left and other groups, who argue the government is working with a regime it refuses to officially recognize.
For foreign residents in Germany, this policy shift signals a harder line on migration enforcement. While current deportations focus on convicted serious criminals, the expanded cooperation with Taliban authorities—including allowing Taliban-appointed diplomats at Afghan missions in Germany—marks a significant shift in how Berlin handles returns to countries it doesn't formally recognize.
