eVisa System Replaces Physical Visa Stickers: New Digital Immigration Status
From July 1, 2026, the UK stopped issuing physical visa vignettes (stickers) to successful applicants. All new visa holders now receive an eVisa—accessed through a UKVI online account—replacing the need to carry physical documents in the passport. The change simplifies travel and reduces document loss risk.
On July 1, 2026, the UK completed its transition from physical visa stickers to a fully digital system. UKVI ceased issuing visa vignettes (the paper stickers previously placed in passports) and now grants all successful applicants an eVisa instead.
How eVisas Work
Online Access Only — When you receive a successful visa decision, you will not receive a physical document in your passport. Instead, you access your eVisa by logging into your UKVI account online and viewing your permission digitally. Before travelling to the UK, you must sign in to check your eVisa and confirm your immigration status.
Linked to Your Account — From March 11, 2026, Home Office travel documents (such as emergency travel documents) were automatically linked to UKVI accounts. Your travel document number now appears alongside your eVisa in your account. If you receive a new travel document, it will appear within 2 working days of your decision.
No Physical Passport Marking — Your passport will not be stamped or marked to show your eVisa. Your immigration permission exists only in the digital system. You should continue to carry your Home Office travel document (if issued) when travelling overseas, but no vignette will appear in your passport.
Accompanying Documents — If you are issued with a Form for Accompanying an eVisa (FAV), you will usually need to return to a Visa Application Centre to collect it. When linked to your eVisa, the FAV allows you to travel to the UK. If your passport or travel document was held at a VAC during processing, the VAC will contact you when it is ready to collect.
Existing Visa Holders — The eVisa transition applies to new applications from July 1, 2026 onwards. If you already hold a physical visa vignette, you do not need to take action unless your visa expires and you need to apply for an extension.
For foreigners and expats, this change means carrying less paperwork but also relying entirely on digital access to prove your immigration status. Ensure you have reliable access to your UKVI account before travelling, and keep your login credentials secure. If you lose access to your account or experience technical issues at the border, contact UKVI immediately. International applicants should also note that their VAC may need to return their passport during processing—follow all instructions from the VAC carefully, as you will not receive the physical proof of approval you may have experienced in the past.
