800+ Family Benefit Now Requires Work Proof for Non-EU Foreigners
Starting June 2026, foreigners receiving Poland's flagship 800+ child benefit must prove monthly employment. The change affects an estimated 1 million Ukrainians and other non-EU nationals, with payments suspended for months without work.
From June 1, 2026, Poland is fundamentally restructuring eligibility for the 800+ (Rodzina 800 Plus) family benefit, the country's most generous childcare programme. Previously, any foreigner with a valid residence permit automatically received 800 PLN monthly per child under 18. Now, non-EU nationals must demonstrate "professional activity" — specifically, employment with ZUS contributions from at least 50% of the minimum wage (2,403 PLN gross monthly) in the preceding month.
The Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) will verify employment status automatically each month. If verification fails, payments suspend immediately for that month with no advance notice. Children must also attend Polish educational institutions to qualify.

- Child holds Polish citizenship (work requirement waived)
- Child has official disability certificate (work requirement waived)
- Parent is an EU/EFTA citizen (unaffected by new rules)
- Bilateral social-security agreement applies (e.g., USA citizens)
The regulation passed the Sejm 276–159 on January 28, 2026. A parallel change to the Dobry Start (300 PLN back-to-school allowance) also introduces employment requirements from July 1, 2026.
What this means for you: If you're a non-EU foreigner relying on 800+, ensure ZUS has current employment records. Remote work for foreign employers without Polish business registration does not count—you'll need to register a Polish sole proprietorship (działalność gospodarcza) to invoice your employer and satisfy the threshold. Parents of children born in Poland to a Polish-citizen partner are exempt. Review your eligibility category now, as overpayments for months you don't qualify may trigger recovery demands.
